Write and preview a math expression
Enter math directly in the source panel, or choose one of the templates. The preview updates as you type. Display layout gives sums, integrals and fractions more room; inline layout uses a compact form suited to surrounding text. The font size changes the preview and PNG export.
Use the Structures, Greek and Operators tabs to insert commands. Select text first to put it inside a fraction, root or other structure; the first argument stays selected so you can replace it. Undo and Redo also work with the usual keyboard shortcuts. Tab moves out of the editor. Syntax errors show a line and column, and Go to error selects the relevant source.
Common LaTeX math syntax
| Expression | LaTeX source |
|---|---|
| Fraction | \frac{a}{b} |
| Square root | \sqrt{x^2 + y^2} |
| Subscript and power | x_{i}^{2} |
| Greek letters | \alpha + \beta = \gamma |
| Summation | \sum_{k=1}^{n} k |
| Words inside math | \text{where } x > 0 |
\frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}
\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix}
\begin{aligned}
y &= mx + b \\
z &= x^2 + y^2
\end{aligned}

LaTeX keeps the formula editable in another math editor. Copy Markdown wraps it in dollar delimiters for platforms with math support. MathML describes the mathematical structure and can be pasted into applications that accept MathML. PNG is useful in slides and documents that need a regular image. Select Transparent PNG for a cutout on a light surface; the checkerboard is a preview aid and is not included in the file.
Edit formulas in a Markdown document
Open in Markdown sends the current equation to Markdown Preview. To update an existing document, select a complete formula there and choose Edit selected math. Make your changes here, then choose Return to Markdown. The surrounding text is preserved. The transfer uses temporary session storage, which is consumed on arrival; the return document then stays in tab memory. Download your document before reloading or closing the equation editor.
The .tex download contains only the formula source. To typeset a paper with sections, citations and a bibliography, use a full TeX environment. This tool focuses on the equation itself. KaTeX supports a large subset of LaTeX math, and its supported-functions reference lists the available commands.
For prose and code blocks, use Markdown Preview. For flowcharts and other diagrams, use the Mermaid Live Editor.
Frequently asked questions
Does this editor compile a full LaTeX document to PDF?
This editor renders individual math expressions with KaTeX. It supports fractions, roots, matrices, aligned equations and many common math commands. It does not compile document classes, packages, bibliographies or complete .tex documents to PDF.
Should I include dollar signs around my formula?
You can paste the expression directly, or wrap it in $, $$, \(…\) or \[…\]. The editor removes one matching outer pair. Use the Display or Inline control to choose the layout. Multiple dollar-delimited expressions mixed with prose are not supported.
How can I use the rendered formula elsewhere?
Copy LaTeX for another math editor, copy Markdown for a platform that supports dollar-delimited math, or copy MathML for software that accepts it. Download PNG creates an image at twice the preview size, with a white or transparent background. Transparent exports use dark ink for light surfaces. Download .tex saves only the expression, not a complete document.
Why is my formula showing an error?
Check for unmatched braces, a missing argument after commands such as \frac, or a command that KaTeX does not support. Matrices need & between columns and two backslashes between rows. The editor accepts at most 10,000 characters and limits macro expansion and oversized dimensions.
Are my formulas uploaded or saved?
Rendering and image export run locally in your browser using assets served by this site. Formula input is not saved automatically. Share link explicitly includes your input and settings in the URL fragment, so anyone with that link can read the formula.
How do I edit an equation from Markdown?
In Markdown Preview or Markdown to HTML, select one complete formula including its delimiters, then choose Edit selected math. The equation editor receives that formula and keeps the surrounding document in tab memory. Return to Markdown replaces the selection and restores the document. Insert formula starts a new equation at the cursor. Reloading the equation editor discards the return context.
