Calendar calculations

Common Time workflows

Elapsed time and calendar time are different calculations. A day can have 23 or 25 hours across a daylight saving change, months have different lengths and ISO week years start on a different date from calendar years. Choose the calculation that matches the question you are answering.

Align dates across systems

Convert named time zones with an explicit daylight saving choice, or inspect an epoch timestamp with the correct unit. Calendar date differences are separate from elapsed hours.

Convert log batches and reporting calendars

Convert lists of epoch or ISO timestamps with per-row errors, then check ISO week-year boundaries or count working dates with a holiday policy you supply.

Prepare timeout and TTL values

Convert fixed ISO durations, seconds and milliseconds using exact nanosecond arithmetic. Use a calendar date when adding months or years instead of assuming a fixed length.

A timestamp has a unit; a displayed date has a time zone

Unix time identifies an instant relative to the epoch. Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds use different scales. Automatic detection is a convenience for common present-day values; override it when working with historical dates or values close to the epoch.

Keep nanosecond values as strings or BigInt

JavaScript Number cannot represent every 19-digit nanosecond timestamp exactly. The converter handles integer microsecond and nanosecond input before reducing it to Date’s millisecond precision. The displayed date therefore does not preserve sub-millisecond detail.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my converted time off by one hour?

The value was probably read in a different time zone or across a daylight saving change. Compare UTC values first, then convert to the named zone you need.

Where are UUID, ULID and Snowflake tools?

Open IDs to generate UUID, ULID, NanoID and KSUID values or decode the timestamps in Snowflake IDs and MongoDB ObjectIds.
