- The first line is the header; every table needs one.
- The second line separates the header and sets alignment with colons.
- Leading and trailing pipes are optional, but make tables easier to read.
- Cells can contain inline Markdown:
**bold**,`code`and links work; lists and paragraphs don’t.
Where Markdown tables work
Tables are part of GitHub Flavored Markdown, so they render on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Notion, Obsidian, Docusaurus,
MkDocs, Jupyter and most static site generators. Plain CommonMark doesn’t include tables; on such platforms, use an HTML
<table>. Check how yours looks in the Markdown preview.
Got a large CSV instead? Explore it in the CSV viewer, or load it into a database with CSV to SQL.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert Excel or Google Sheets to a Markdown table?
Select the cells in the spreadsheet and copy them. Open “Import from a spreadsheet, CSV or Markdown”, paste, and click Import. Spreadsheets copy cells as tab-separated text, which is detected automatically; the first row becomes the header.
How do I align columns in a Markdown table?
Add colons to the separator line under the header: :--- aligns left, :---: centers and ---: aligns right. Without colons, the renderer’s default applies (usually left). In the editor, click the alignment button next to each header to cycle through the options.
How do I put a pipe character or a line break in a cell?
A literal | must be escaped as \| or it would start a new cell; the generator does this for you. Markdown tables can’t contain real line breaks, so a newline in a cell is written as <br>, which GitHub, GitLab and most renderers display as a line break.
Do columns have to line up in the source?
No. Renderers only care about the pipes, so a compact table works the same. Aligned columns are just easier to read and review in plain text. The generator pads cells using display width, so tables with Chinese, Japanese, Korean or emoji line up in monospace editors too.
Can I reformat an existing Markdown table?
Yes. Paste the table into the import box: it is parsed, including alignment, escaped pipes and code spans, and the output is re-aligned. This is handy after editing a table by hand.
